What to change in your routine when the weather turns
Shop your own Beauty Board first. Swap a richer cream or gentler cleanse on your routine list, instead of buying a new shelf.

When the air turns cold and dry, skin usually feels tighter by midday and base makeup sits differently by afternoon. That is normal, and it calls for small adjustments, not a new shelf of products. Open Beauty Board, look at what you already saved, and change the routine list. Shop your own catalogue before you shop anyone else's.
One note on timing: readers here span hemispheres, so read "when the weather turns" as your own cold season arriving, whenever that falls.
What actually changes when the air gets colder
Cold air holds less moisture, indoor heating dries it further, and hot showers strip more than lukewarm ones. The result is more water leaving the skin between morning and night. Skin that felt balanced in humid months can feel tight, look flaky around the nose and mouth, and drink up layers that used to sit on the surface.
None of this means your routine was wrong. It means the conditions changed. Adjust the layers, not the whole approach.
The swaps worth making
Three changes cover most people, and all three start from products you may already own.
A gentler cleanse. If your warm-weather cleanser leaves skin feeling tight in winter, switch to a milder one for the cold months. Cleansing is the step that most easily over-strips when the air is dry, and it is the cheapest swap to make.
A richer moisturiser. This is the main seasonal move. A slightly heavier cream, or the same cream layered over a hydrating serum, holds comfort through the day. If you already own a richer jar that felt too much in summer, its season has arrived.
One occlusive-style layer for bad weeks. In the driest stretch, a final sealing layer over the evening cream, even plain over the driest areas, can make the difference. Use it as a temporary measure, not a permanent sixth step.
Search your catalogue for these before you buy. Then swap them onto the existing routine: same morning and evening sections, different cream.

What to leave exactly as it is
Sunscreen stays. Cold sun still reaches skin, and winter light through windows still counts. Keep the morning protection step untouched. If anything, a moisturising sunscreen formula suits the season well, but the habit itself does not change.
Treatments stay, mostly. The serum or treatment that works for you keeps working. Do not pause everything out of caution. The one exception: if skin is visibly irritated or flaking, ease back on strong exfoliating style products until the barrier feels calm again, then reintroduce slowly.
Cleansing frequency stays. Adding extra washes because skin feels congested under heavier cream usually makes dryness worse. If the richer layers feel heavy, use less product rather than washing more.
Shop your own shelf before you buy anything
Before shopping, open Beauty Board and look at what you already own. Most people with more than a year of buying have a richer cream, a gentler cleanser, or a hydrating serum sitting half used from a previous season. Seasonal switching is mostly remembering what you have saved.
This is also the moment a catalogue earns its keep. When every product sits in one place with its brand, name, and photo, the cold-weather routine assembles from existing stock in minutes. If your products still live in screenshots and half-remembered drawers, keep every beauty product you own in one place is the twenty-minute job that makes this possible.
Anything you still need goes on the wishlist, not straight into the basket. A week on the list is usually enough to tell you whether the gap is real.
Base makeup behaves differently too
Dry air changes how base sits. Foundations that looked seamless in humid months can catch on dry patches, and powder that set things nicely can look heavy. Two small fixes usually suffice: a touch less powder, only where needed, and checking the shade against the foundation record you already saved, since paler winter skin can shift you half a step. If a shade decision looms, how to find your foundation shade online covers doing it from the products you already keep.
Keep both versions of the routine
Do not rebuild twice a year. Keep a warm-weather routine and a cold-weather routine side by side, or swap the cream on the same morning and evening list. Switching seasons becomes a choice rather than a rebuild, and switching back is just as easy.
The order underneath stays the same in both versions: cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect. Only the weight of the layers changes. What order to apply skincare, morning and night is the reference if the sequence itself ever needs a reset.
Make the swap once, save it on the routine, and stop thinking about it until the air changes again.
