How to keep a beauty empties list

Move finished products onto a Beauty Board empties list with one line on whether you would repurchase. That list is the restock list.

An empties list is a record of what you finished, not a graveyard of packaging. Beauty people keep one because a finished bottle is the only honest review you will write: you used it all, so you know whether to buy it again. In Beauty Board that list is just another view of products you have already saved. Move them there when they run out, write one line, and let the list become the restock list.

Why empties are more useful than a haul

A haul says what arrived. An empty says what earned its place. Those are different documents. The haul is hopeful. The empty is evidence.

Without a list, finished products vanish. You remember that you liked "the cleanser," then buy a different one because the name has gone. Or you repurchase on autopilot and only notice at month three that you have not been excited about it since bottle one. The empty, with one line attached, stops both mistakes.

This is also why project pan and empties culture overlap. Finishing is the point. The list is how finishing becomes a decision instead of a forgotten bin.

One list, one line, no ceremony

Create a list called Empties. When a product runs out, it is already in your Beauty Board catalogue if you have been saving as you go. Put that same record on the empties list. Do not create a second product. Do not photograph the trash. Write one line on the record:

  • Repurchase. You would buy this again in the same shade or size.
  • Not again. One reason: too drying, shade off, did not earn the price, slow to use.
  • Maybe, in winter / in travel size / if it is on offer. Bounded, not vague.

That is enough. Dates, ratings out of ten, and a paragraph of notes all sound thorough and all turn a ten-second habit into admin you will skip the night the mascara dies.

The everyday bottle you always think you still have. Own versus finished is the field that earns its keep.

The empties list is the restock list

Keep wants and restocks apart. A wishlist is curiosity. Empties that say repurchase are the shopping list you can trust, because they came from a finished bottle rather than a mood.

When you next shop, open Empties first. Anything marked repurchase can go in the basket without a second debate. Anything marked not again stays out, even if the packaging has changed and the ad is good. Search the catalogue if you are unsure whether a "new" serum is the one you already finished and disliked. Stop buying skincare you already own is that check.

Finished also means you can take the product off the everyday routine and the capsule without losing the history. The record stays. The views update. You are not deleting the lesson to make the shelf look tidy.

What to do with products you will not finish

Not everything should reach empty. A mascara past its season, a cream that has turned, a shade you will never wear: those leave by a different door. When to throw out makeup and skincare covers the signs. How to declutter a makeup collection without regretting it covers pass-on and bin.

You can still write the line. "Binned, turned" and "passed on, too deep" belong on the record for the same reason empties do. Future-you in the shop does not need to know whether the bottle was drained or donated. Future-you needs to know not to buy it again.

Keep the habit smaller than the community version

Some empties posts are monthly flatlays with every bottle lined up. That is a nice ritual and a terrible requirement. The useful version is quieter: product runs out, product goes on the list, one line, done.

If you like the photo, take it. If you do not, skip it. The catalogue already has the packshot. The decision is the line, not the picture of the recycling.

Start with the next thing you finish, not with a backlog. One honest empty teaches the habit. A reconstructed year of empties from memory is fiction, and you already know how those sheets go.
